There has been much said in the newspapers about identity fraud. Of late, the constant stream of sensationalist articles seem to have slowed and, therefore, it is tempting to believe that modern technology has helped ensure that this problem has gone away.
In reality though, the problem of identity fraud is as big as it ever was – it just probably wasn’t that big in the first place and instead was just a perfect story to help sell some newspapers. However, just because it is not as prevalent as it might have once seemed, this doesn’t mean that it is not an issue that needs to be dealt with.
More importantly, it should be noted that businesses are also at risk from the very same frauds, a fact omitted by many articles that wished to target the individual to increase the fear factor. Therefore, businesses need to take as many precautions as individuals – if not more – if they do not wish to be the target of fraud.
Whilst it is easy for residential mail to be placed through a letter box directly into the house, many businesses will have mail going to so many departments it will become extremely easy for items to go missing or to be picked up by rogue hands.
It is therefore extremely wise for businesses to look at their current set up for collecting and distributing mail. A simple letter box will not be right for the majority of companies and, especially for larger ones or ones who share buildings with other businesses, a secure mail box is going to be needed. With the right, safe mail box and the right distribution process put in place, the chances of fraud can be reduced dramatically.
Fraud may not be as common as it first seemed, but it is still wise to be covered – the cost of putting the right process in place will be negligible compared to the potential consequences of not.
