Becoming a PA can seem to be far easier than entering certain other lines of work. After all, you don’t need any formal qualifications or training and, instead, you may well be able to find a job simply by having the certain skills and the right temperament.
However, there is almost always going to be more to becoming a PA than simply sending off a few CVs and turning up to the interviews. PA roles have changed dramatically over the last few years from a secretarial role to one that involves hands-on management and, in many cases, even managing the managers themselves. Therefore, whilst a great deal of training will probably be given to someone who perfectly fits the bill, it can be extremely worthwhile to ensure you stand out from the crowd too.
Firstly, you will need to have excellent computer skills and even better organisational skills. The latter can be harder to prove and whilst previous life or work experience may talk for itself, for those wanting the best PA jobs, a short executive PA course could make a huge difference to not only your chances but also to how quickly you adapt to any new job.
Having other skills at your disposal will also be extremely useful. Taking a payroll course or Sage course will show that you can be useful in many different areas of the business and potentially help them cut costs elsewhere.
Finally, when it comes time for an interview, be prepared – research the company you have applied to and, where possible, even the individual you will be working for. In any unsuccessful interviews, ask for feedback as to what impressed them and what didn’t – it is worth remembering that you may have negative traits you are unaware of that will be picked up on and therefore researching yourself can be as invaluable as researching your target companies.
