For years now ordnance survey maps have been sold all over the world to walkers, travellers and motorists for both personal and business reasons. While the more traditional paper ordnance survey maps are still as popular as ever you can now buy them digitally too as more and more people are downloading them to their mobile phones, tablets and personal computers.
The traditional paper ordnance survey maps can be bought from all different types of shops on our local high street. Stationers and Post Offices are just two examples of where they can be bought, as are petrol stations, garages and newsagents. They can also be bought via the internet too as there are many companies that now sell them, and they can of course be bought direct from the Ordnance Survey organisation themselves. If you are looking for a used copy of an Ordnance survey map then auction sites are a great place to buy, and more often than not you are able to grab a great bargain if you prefer to do your shopping via this particular method.
If you just want to look at a copy of ordnance survey maps than a visit to your local library would be in order as many now hold copies of all maps ever produced, though you will not be able to take them home as they are for use on the premises only.
Ordnance survey maps were first introduced in the late 18th century when the Scottish Highlands were the first place to be officially mapped. It wasn’t until 1801 that the first one inch to one mile maps were introduced with the county of Kent being the first official area to be mapped this way, though the county of Essex was completed shortly after. Also Ordnance survey maps were drawn up during the first and second world wars with France and Belgium being the first two areas that were completed.
Ordnance survey maps have been and still are popular amongst old and young people alike, and in years to come thanks to the advent of the internet they will still be as popular as ever some 200 years since they were first drawn up.
