It provides for the aesthetics and weather protection in automotive. There are three kinds of base coats which are used in automotive applications. They are solid Paint, metallic paints and pearlescent paints. They all cater in different ranges and gives different effects as per the needs of the client.
- Solid paints have no sparkle to it. They are just plain colors and the easiest type to apply. For example the colors we see on heavy vehicles such as truck or bus.
- Metallic paints gives sparky and grainy effects. Metallic seems shiny. It is harder to manage this paint due to extra dimensions that go in it.
- Pearlescent paints contains special pigments known as pearls. Pearl pigments add a sparkle to the finish which gives depth to the color. Metallic & Pearlescent Paint must be applied evenly for a consistent look finish without light and dark spots which are known as mottling.
The third process is known as clear coat which is also known as top coat. As the name says it is usually sprayed on the top. It gives glossy effect. It is transparent and glossy which forms the interface with the environment. Clear coat must be durable enough so that it can resist the abrasion and should be chemically stable to take the UV lights. Clear coat are of two types either waterborne or solvent.
