Being honest, the thought of foam probably doesn’t enter your mind on a day to day basis. But the truth is you may be surprised just how much you depend on it. We use it every day and without it our lives would be very different. But just how do foam manufacturers make their money and what is it used for?
The common uses for foam we think of are around the house. From beds to sofas, there are many items of furniture that use this material to assist with their comfort. But there are also plenty of other uses.Foam manufactures also sell their product to be used in packaging, with its lightweight yet protective qualities making it perfect for the job. It is also used in business for soundproofing, as it can work out a lot more cost effective than buying specialist materials, yet does the job just as well.
Its flotation qualities are also put to use in the swimming pool, with many children learning to swim thanks to flotation aids constructed out of the material. And the uses don’t stop there. The list could go on for days with toys, chair cushions, pillows and sponges all being included.
Foam was first developed in the 1950’s, however its first form was a bit too stiff to be used in the way we use it today. This meant its popularity didn’t grow until later on. Its development is seen as one of the most important developments in the world of materials thanks to the fact it has entered all of our every day lives.
So although you may not think it particularly spectacular, the truth is that the uses of this material affect every one of us and, without it, many products would not exist. Although it may not be thought of as one of the most important materials it’s safe to say we should be grateful for its creation.
