Getting into acting is not as crazy and unlikely as it may seem. Sure the prospect of years at drama school followed by an uncertain future and attending all those acting auditions with no guaranteed income is very daunting, and not for everyone. But acting is a passion, and those who have that passion have to act. Whilst the idea of being discovered by some director or producer is, of course, nothing but a daydream – there are alternative methods of not only getting into acting, but seeing for yourself the reality of the film and TV industry from the inside before committing yourself to a path that is not for you.
Making yourself available as an extra is a great way of earning a bit of money as well as giving you the opportunity of seeing the world of film and TV acting from backstage. Drama students often appear as extras in film and TV programmes as a means of generating income and making contacts in the industry. And don’t be fooled into thinking that film and TV professionals look down on extras, you’ll be a vital component in the film or programme they’re making – and let’s not forget that that’s how many of them first got started in their career.
It’s even possible that whilst you may discover that acting is not for you, your experience on set has led you to view other film and TV roles as a your future goal: camera operator, editor, director even? One famous film script writer took on work as an extra just so he could get to know all the people who worked in a studio.
