Kipling bags are famous for two essential elements of their iconic design – the crinkled nylon fabric used to make each bag, and the detachable monkey key-hanger. Kipling bags were originally invented in 1987 as a backpack which was both functional and fun, and the monkey was part of this. While originally there was only one monkey, as the range of bags has developed, so too has the range of monkeys, which now come in different styles and colours. Each monkey has a label saying its name, which comes from Kipling employees across the world and corresponds to the different colours that the bags are available in. The name Kipling and the idea of the monkey came from Rudyard Kipling’s ‘Jungle Book’, in which the monkey characters symbolise fun and adventure.
The Kipling brand is no longer restricted to the original backpack design. As they are a favoured brand for travellers due to their fun, colourful and easy to maintain fabric, their cross body bags are also extremely popular. Cross body bags are great for travellers because they are so much harder to steal than a shoulder bag, and also leave your hands free to get on with looking at your map or using your camera in the same way that a backpack would. Whereas your backpack is hard to access when you do want something out of it, however, because you need to take it off, a cross body bag is right there for you dip into whenever you want to get something out or put something away.
Kipling also do a range of shoulder bags available in different sizes. Many of their shoulder bags also have adjustable straps to turn them into a cross body bag for even further versatility, and they also come in large enough sizes to house A4 files.
