Did you know that net curtains have been used in many home since the 1700s? Net curtains have always provided people with privacy whilst still letting plenty of light into the room and this has been the same from the 18th century to the 21st century.
Unlike today, in the 1700s, the fabric for the net curtains was all made in England and were made of lace, woven from cotton, wool or silk. Silk lace was considered to be the finest type of net curtain. Today, a lot of net curtains tend to be made from synthetic materials as this reduces the cost of the net curtains considerably.
In previous centuries, as well as being used as window dressings, net curtains were also used as surroundings for beds and in doorways to provide privacy and separate sections of a house.though today many people use net curtains alone, evidence shows that in Victorian times many people would have net curtains, heavier curtains and shutters all on the same window!
Today, we now have a huge variety of curtains for windows.
